Marco Build Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for volunteering your time and hard work to help build Marco Island’s very own playground “The Kids’ Cove at Mackle Park”. Please read the following information carefully to help answer questions. Once you have submitted your volunteer form, we will be contacting you one more time by phone to clarify dates and times.
Who should volunteer?
If you live on Marco, or you are visiting Marco you should volunteer! There’s jobs for everyone regardless of skill level. We need heavy laborors, but there are many minimal labor jobs as well. Basically, if you are breathing on Marco, we have a place for you to help!
What are the available shifts?
From Tuessday to Sunday, March 8 – 13, there will be three shifts: 8 a.m. to 12 noon, 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. to closing time. Please sign up AHEAD of time for some of these shifts, for our planning purposes. Of course, you may always just show up, even if not previously scheduled, as additional help is always desired!
What can I expect?
As you arrive at Mackle Park for your shift, sign in at the Volunteers Table and receive a name tag. A runner will then assemble a team of three or four, with at least one skilled person on each crew. As crews assemble, they will be given an overview of the site, told where the tools can be found, where the food will be served, where First-Aid is available and so on. A crew may not begin work until given instructions by a Construction Captain or one of the four Leathers & Associate Consultants on-site throughout the build.
What about tools?
The success of the build depends on having enough tools for all of the volunteers. Certain specialized tools will be rented, or loaned from local businesses, but the bulk of the items need to be loaned by the community. Dan Garbinski is in charge of the loaned tools. Please check out our tools page, by clicking on Dan the Tool Man for details.
Dress Code & Safety
The construction area will be a designated building site, and appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn. Open-toed shoes such as sandals may not be worn. Don’t wear your jewelry, but do wear a hat. We work rain or shine! A site Safety Captain will be present at all times, and First-Aid will be available. The site will have appropriate insurance.
What about the kids during the build?
Childcare will be provided for toilet-trained children ages 3-9 years. Please call Michelle Robau at 394-7615 and register your child(ren) or to help with childcare. You must check in with the volunteer table before placing your child in childcare. Children ages 10-13 can work on site along with an adult partner. Youth ages 14-17 can work independently on site (no power tools, per insurance).
